Being a FIREFIGHTER is a very
rewarding career. It is more than just a job! Being a FIREFIGHTER means that
you are willing to take risks that most people run from. Running into burning
buildings while others are running out, requires a special frame of mind.
A FIREFIGHTER must posses
the skills and attributes of:

you do now to prepare?

Enroll into a
Fire Technology program at a local Community College

Enroll
in an Emergency Medical Technician Course

Become
CPR certified

Pass
the CPAT [

If you
are under 21 years of age, join a Fire Explorer post

Develop
a comprehensive workout routine to build stamina and upper body strength

Keep a
notebook and research the job of firefighting. The internet, libraries and
fire stations are good places to start.

Contact
the Firefighters bookstore in Huntington Beach, CA, for books and information
about what Firefighters do!

Enroll in a
state accredited FIREFIGHTER academy.

Learn
how to read a Thomas Brothers map guide and locate the fire stations.

Visit the
African
American Firefighter Museum

Become a volunteer
in a community based organization
Start preparing
yourself now. Practice General Principles such as: Good time management, promptness,
being authentic, respectful, conscientious.

The National Firefighter Selection
Inventory (NFSI) Internet Practice Examination [Version prepared by I/O Solutions],
LLC contains 105 questions that assess job related cognitive skills required
of a firefighter. This examination is currently being used by over 1000 agencies
nationwide. Practice test: cognitive (i.e., reading, writing, math) portion
of the entrance examination. There is a fee.
