L0S ANGELES COUNTY STENTORIANS
JAN - OCT 2009
The Stentorians is an organization comprised of fire service professionals from the Los Angeles City and County Fire Departments. The organization was founded in 1954 by black firefighters of the Los Angeles Fire Department who were forced to work under segregated conditions, out of two fire stations, both of which were located on Central Avenue. The purpose of their organizing was to address the unfairness of the segregated conditions they worked under since 1902.
Today, the Stentorians is and organization which proudly boasts two chapters - The Los Angeles City Stentorians and the Los Angeles County Stentorians. Membership consists of African American and non-African American fire service professionals. These professionals work in a variety of disciplines such as in Dispatch as civilian dispatchers as well as in clerical, administrative, mechanical, technical, supervisory and managerial positions within the various support and other operational organizations throughout the Los Angeles City Fire and Los Angeles County Fire Departments.
The Stentorians continue to address issues of adverse impact and disparate treatment of African Americans in the fire service. We are charter members of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters. As an organization, we provide speakers to civic and community organizations as well as to commercial and educational institutions. We conduct a junior fire cadet program at a local elementary school, conduct an annual holiday toy drive, and we provide training and preparation to individuals seeking a career in the fire service. In addition, we conduct CPR classes, C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) training and first aid classes out of our facility located at 1409 W. Vernon Avenue in Los Angeles. On March 28, 2009, the newly elected City and County Stentorian Executive Boards were sworn in at the annual Promotional Ceremony, held at the African American Firefighter Museum. Fire Chief Douglas Barry of the Los Angeles Fire Department and Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department were both in attendance and offered congratulatory messages, and words of support to the two boards, and their respective organizations.
